@emacsomancer Oh, okay. In middle school I had access to email through a VAX server (the horror!), then UNIX shell access through a local ISP, where I taught myself Perl and shell scripting, inter alia. I had an old cartridge-based Atari that had a BASIC cartridge, but that's my only experience with Atari.

DOS/Windows were fine in their time, but they've been superseded by vastly more powerful systems. Most users don't need anything more than those two, though.
