I think they are focusing on the welfare of the very poor and vulnerable people who make the raw materials and components of modern smartphones.

But if you're a tech fan you can install alternative OSes on Fairphone 2, so presumably that will be possible for Fairphone 3:

There's also Fairphone's own alternative OS, Fairphone Open:

Sure, but there are ethics to do with manufacturing hardware too (working conditions, conflict funding, child labour etc).

I said "tech fan" just because the process of installing an alternative OS is technically quite difficult, much more difficult than installing an OS on a computer :blobsad:

I don't know if it is as simple as that :/

Shipping an alternative OS direct to consumers would mean having to offer full tech support for it, which could suck up a lot of resources.

It would be nice as an option though, yeah.

Fairphone is about paying people a fair wage, i.e. more than the market rate.

The only reason people buy this hardware is specifically to give workers better working conditions.

If you're going to dismiss an initiative like this that people have dedicated years to building up, it would be nice to hear specific realistic actions that you would advocate instead.

There's also a Fairphone Open version of Android, but you have to install this yourself:

      https://code.fairphone.com/

I'm not a consumer law expert, but I'm guessing that anyone selling new phones with non-Android OSes preinstalled would have to provide tech support for that OS?

If it's something like Lineage there is a lot that can go wrong and it would take a lot of resources to support it.

      Fairphone isn't a huge multinational.

Fairphone are distributing the software, that's what the code.fairphone.com site is for.

I'm just guessing that it would cause more harm than good if they tried to sell this preinstalled, as non-tech people would be swamping their support channels asking why apps X, Y and Z don't work.

But again, I don't work there so I can't say for sure what the reasons are.
