Something often requested is a libre alternative to Google Translate.

There's a site called Apertium which is a free open translation system:

    https://www.apertium.org

It's still under development, you can help out at:

    https://github.com/apertium

As far as I know DeepL isn't free or open?

It's not perfect or even ready (it's missing many languages too including massive ones like German), but I couldn't find any other alternatives as developed as this :blobsad:

Hopefully someone can work with the code already released to make it more privacy-friendly.

By the way, there was some discussion in an older thread about installing Apertium without Google stuff, I don't know how much help this is?

Yeah, it's clearly not ready for "primetime" yet, but hopefully the work already done leads to something more useful to a general audience.

Perhaps foundations and/or governments can fund this kind of service through grants? (I think this happens with e.g. OpenStreetMap's servers?)

I used to list OpenNMT on switching.social's "Bubbling Under" section but their demo server seemed to disappear?

Good to hear they are still going 👍

Neither of those are free or open.

DeepL says explicitly that there is no privacy on the free version of their site.

Yandex are a for-profit tech giant that makes money from ads and tracking people.

I wish I could help but I'm not a developer or admin, so I don't really know the backend issues here :blobsad:

Obviously anything that removes Google from the picture is a good idea 👍

I think Weblate is a slightly different kind of translation? (for people manually translating rather than computers automatically translating)
