He took $40M for #OLPC, then asked for donations too. The stated goal was putting an open, hackable learning tool in the hands of underprivileged children... But secretly, he made a deal with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer to help them market cut-down versions of Windows and Office to schools in developing countries.
OLPC employees first learnt this from the press release. Pure bait and switch.
