I believe that when Gab switched to Mastodon, the integrity of the Fediverse as a whole was questioned. Sure there was instance blocking and these same conversations beforehand, but Gab brought this to every admin's front door.

I have been thinking that @freemo's idea of the group of instances is the way to go, or it should at least be tested. Groups of instances which will not block each other could improve the situation somewhat. There needs to be repercussions to blocking everyone with whom you disagree.

@masterofthetiger Thanks, the idea obviously needs discussion and some tweaking, but i can think of at least a dozen different ways it can be implemented.

I do agree that gab joining the network was the triggering factor. I even understand why gab gets suspended a lot, 80% - 90% of their users are quite unbearable and shameful. If i werent an admin I'd probably have a personal gab domain block just to block out the hateful noise if nothing else.

With that said the solution is not to block anyone with a federation path to gab of any kind, indirect or otherwise. The solution is to create cooperatives, groups of servers that promise not to block each other, and to mutually block any external servers that block them, but at the same time be free to suspect or silence servers outside the cooperative as they wish.

As I always say "We will listen to you but only if you listen to us" is the only fair bargain.
