    So all this stuff about interference patterns and slits...

    To make a hologram, you take a laser beam and split it, then illuminate the object you want to holograph with one beam and the film with the other beam and the reflected light on the object. The thing the film is recording is the interference pattern. Illuminate the developed film with the same wavelength laser and you see a 3d image of the original object.
