Long before the campaign even starts, you should build relationships with your coworkers. Get to know them, hang out with them outside of work. Come to understand and respect them as people, and help them do the same for you. Make it so that you can sit down and talk to them at any time and it won't be a significant hurdle. I was liked well-enough but very reserved prior to the campaign, which made organising my department very difficult.
