Unfortunately, Telegram is pretty bad in that regards too. That's a pity because imho it has the best and friendliest user interface of them all. But the encryption is opt-in and also does not use recommended standards. Also, they store everything in the cloud - not even WhatsApp does that. I think Telegram had a nice user interface update, but it's not open source too.

I think Threema had a nice user interface update, but it's not open source too.

It is, security wise! It still uploads your contacts to find out if they use signal, but you'll hardly find any messenger that doesn't (or nobody else uses them). Riot messenger can do it, but good luck finding your contacts, then. The problem with the "good" messengers is that there mostly aren't many contacts using them as well. But if you want to give Signal a try, go for it. :) Not too techy I think.
