    Developers / OpenStreetMap enthusiasts,

    How plausible would it be for someone to set up their own instance of Qwant Maps?

    The git is here:
    https://github.com/QwantResearch/qwantmaps/

    (I ask as OSM really needs a user-friendly mapping site like this, but Qwant seem to be a somewhat problematic company for various reasons.)

      @ak

      No single dramatic reason, but an accumulation of concerning issues:

      -They seem to be partially owned by a publisher that isn't great about copyright issues.
      -There have been various articles in the French-speaking world about their working practices and quality of their index
      -They are partnering with the Brave web browser (which is part-owned by Peter Thiel)

      It seems prudent to explore alternatives.

      Hmm... Do you know if it is problems with OSM, or problems with how Qwant Maps displays OSM data?

      @xinayder

      The OSM org site is intended for map maintainers rather than end users.

      Qwant Maps seems like a better interface for end users, and I'm asking if (based on the git) it is plausible for other people to use the same code to make their own instances.

      Ok.

      I think this really depends on the area, where I live the OSM data is very good indeed (better than Google).

      Sounds interesting. I can't find MetaGer's OSM instance, do you have a link for it?

      Openrouteservice is a great site (and I list it in switching.social) but it's mainly mean for routes.

      The thing I like about Qwant Maps is its friendliness for finding stuff in general, rather than just routes.

      @digitalcourage @JayVii_de

      Thanks.

      MetaGer still seems a bit... basic.

      For example, on Qwant Maps I can search for Madrid, then click on the "hotels" button to see hotels in the area, then click on a particular hotel to find details about it.

      This is what makes it more user-friendly for someone who wants more than just the map itself.

      Is there any way MetaGer could borrow elements of Qwant Maps' source to do this?
