The West was not florishing in the 1970s. Rahter, it found itself confronted by recessions, rising unemployment (due to abolishing of keynsian economic strategies), and price inflation. the oil crisis of 1973-73 exacerbated these difficulties, but did not cause them. Much like the East, the *west was reaching the limits of energy intensive industrial growth* and one can argue, that it does until today.
