We recently had a flat-earther. I was tolerant of this up until the point he got aggressive in private messages when asked about if he is a STEM student or professional. So the situation mostly resolved itself, he is no longer with us.
With that said how should we handle people who are otherwise respectful but post almost 100% flat-earth content (basically people who are explicitly anti-STEM)?

@snow I dont consider it ethical to sharing private messages, its a right to privacy thing. With that said, even if i wanted to, I cant, since the account no longer exists neither does the content.

@retiredguru I tend to agree with you in principle. Its why QOTO doesnt silence instances and is very liberal (non-restrictive) in our federation policy. We only defederate in very specific cases.
We are talking here about a local user on QOTO. QOTO sells itself on the about page as a STEM instance. So to me there is a question on what that means. If we allow anti-STEM people on our instance then how can we call us something we are not. But it is rarely enforced as a rule, I dont want to say who is STEM enough and who isnt, but this was also at an extream. Like I said spamming 80 posts of very clear anti-STEM conspiracy stuff.. all 100% flat earth stuff.
I think there needs to be a higher standard for our local users than there is for who we federate. But i also want to get in a policy where as long as your interest is STEM, you are welcome here even if its contrary to the majority.

@retiredguru @freemo I would suggest not basing the wording on who they are but rather how they behave in qoto. Just like accounts that are primarily aimed at advertising goods and services, account that are primarily aimed at spreading nonsensical claims on nature of things with no basis in any scientific theory could be disallowed.
If someone is a "flat earther" or an "icosahedron mooner" or whatever, but refrains from spamming their beliefs in qoto, and otherwise engages in meaningful conversations/interactions I see no reason to force them to leave.
On the other hand if someone is a professor in some respected university, but decides to troll qoto with bogus theories just to demonstrate their superior knowledge and debate skills, there is no reason to let them stay.

Thats fine. The guy who inspired this question was blasting anti-STEM conspiracy theory stuff, mostly all flat-earth related directly or indirectly.. 80 posts over the course of a few days.
