    @jasper @aearil @lunch

    Found this a while ago: https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/issues/29965#issuecomment-922377500

    Who knows... I'm thinking about moving to yt-dlp too, although I read that the options are a bit different. Gotta look into it. Sigh.

      @aearil No, thank you for providing the mpv config line! Unfortunately, it doesn't work for the version (0.32) included in Debian stable, 'cause it doesn't support the ytdl_path key.

      I have installed yt-dlp and everything else seems to work, including one script that acts as my local "subscription" feed from my favorite channels.

      @tagomago @jasper @lunch Thank you!

      And yt-dlp seems similar enough that it can be used as a drop in replacement with mpv, and anecdotally, it didn't break any of my homemade scripts that used youtube-dl

      @aearil Thx! I use mpv as a YT player just casually, so I believe I'll be surviving like this for a while :-D

      @tagomago too bad :/ Though you can probably take inspiration from the yt-dlp-drop-in AUR package someone posted in the answer. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt for debian?

      @tagomago @aearil
      I also have mpv v0.32 and got it working by using a symbolic link for yt-dlp to youtube-dl:
      $ ln -s $(command -v yt-dlp) ~/.local/bin/youtube-dl
      (or replace /usr/local/bin with whatever you want that's in your PATH)

      @ryandaniels @aearil Ty! I always get confused by symlinks. Shouldn't I link from youtube-dl to yt-dlp as target instead? Btw, I didn't know you can symlink commands, though it makes sense, being files too ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

      @tagomago @ryandaniels @aearil It's a bit backwards, but maybe it helps to note that `ln -s` and `cp -s` both create symlinks.

      I still call it a symlink from b to a and that's the way the ASCII arrow points when you list the directory, it's just that the argument order when you create it is `ln -s a b` for symmetry with hardlinks and copies.

      It's like you started off wanting to copy a to b and then you decided nah, I'll just make b a symlink back to a instead.
