     sorrentino's fiction is all about having your cake and eating it. all his characters are suffering from a profound lack that he explores in merciless detail. and his magicians trick consists in somehow filling that unfillable gap, bringing satisfaction to unsatisfiable urges, finding closure and fulfilling desire. each of his films is a fantastical fable in this sense, thats why they work so well. they make no secret of lying to you
