   Let's talk about car racing #anime of the '70s.

   A series that came to my mind today is Machine Hayabusa (マシンハヤブサ), known in Italy as "Ken Falco e il Superbolide".

   It wasn't particularly realistic or well animated, but the Ken's car had a distinctive feature: a jet engine!

     I couldn't find the original series, but I clearly remember one episode in which Ken tests a prototype with triple jet engines.

     This dangerous design costed the life of his father when the engines became unstable after reaching a particular speed.

     But Ken pushes the car to the limit anyway... and as the engines start blowing red flames, he figures out that releasing the gas will cause the engine to explode... so he pushes the pedal and... WHAM! Stable blue flames!

     A far more improbable racing #anime was Chou Supercar Gattiger, in which 5 cars would get into formation and combine (gattai) into a vehicle too big for any Japanese road. For some reason, they *had* to combine in each episode, or else the toys wouldn't sell.

     You can safely skip it.

     By the way, chou (super) and gattai (combination, union) are recurring words in #mecha #anime.

     For example, "Chou-Muteki Gattai" (超無敵合体) means "super invincible union":

     Getting back to car racing #anime, Grand Prix is the least unrealistic series of the 70s, and also the most tragic.

     After surviving a serious accident, Takaya Todoroki is persuaded to return to racing by Niki Lauda, who's been disfigured when his car caught fire.

     But after overcoming his fears... he keeps on losing race after race! Usually it's just bad luck, sometimes the ghosts of the past. Sometimes running over the woman he loves. Takaya is really *really* unlucky!

     But they don't give up. Of course... ganbatte ne!

     Takaya figures that his car can't hold the road because... it didn't have enough wheels! Of course, we need 6 wheels. But he keeps on driving off road, so he adds 2 more. I remember that he also re-arranges them in different ways and adds an adjustable spoiler on the front.

     I didn't quite remember if they ever win any race in the end, but here's a clip from the last episode:

     Maybe they suddenly ran out of money in the middle of the episode and rushed a happy ending? 🤔

     Anyway, I found where they discuss adding even more wheels to the car: it's episode 16, but I could only find it in low quality and dubbed in Spanish.

     Dammit, someone should seriously archive rare vintage #anime before they are lost forever!

     I remember watching Speed Racer, but not liking it due to its 1960's animation style. I heard it was very popular in the USA.

     @keadamander The original 1979 Gundam was also meant to be one of these low budget anime that exist mainly to promote a toy, but somehow they managed to write a good story with enough background to begin a huge space opera. #anime #gundam

     Guess what? All you had to do to stabilize the V3 was pushing it beyond the critical point!

     Somehow, the engineers who designed this rocket car couldn't figure that out without the help of a know-it-all kid pilot! 😂
