I don't see any obvious sensors at the bottom of my Thinkpad...
Perhaps it's simply an accelerometer to determine if the laptop is horizontal and still?

@codewiz I'm guessing it could be seen on the fan speed, amperage or, ratio between fan speed and cpu temp. Basically when the air inlet is blocked, the fan will spin faster (paradox), draw more current (or less? I'm not sure now), but the cpu temp will still rise because of the insufficient air. Like when you block the hose of a vacuum cleaner you hear different sound.
@prplecake Good guess, there's an air intake on the bottom.
@codewiz possibly some sort of air flow sensor in case any intakes are blocked
