    You know what doesn't suck any more?

    Signal Desktop.

    I installed it via #flatpak long ago, and it kept updating regularly, improving with every dot release. Now it starts quickly and no longer uses noticeable amounts of cpu time while idle. #signal

      @dh34r7h @session I would, but it can't exchange messages with Signal users, right?

      @cherti @dh34r7h btw, Element also got more usable, both the Android app and the web interface. You could almost get your grandparents on it!

      It's e2ee, identity is not bound to a phone number, and covers well the group chat usecase (IRC, Slack) as well as IMs (WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram...) and simple video calling apps (Skype, Duo...).

      It's probably not a good replacement for Zoom and Google Meet, but for that there's Jitsi.

      @dh34r7h @codewiz Session, that messenger that removed Perfect Forward Secrecy from their protocol because they were unable to make state-of-the-art cryptography work in their infrastructure, whereas all the competitors from Signal over Matrix over XMPP over Briar support it without hassle…? I'm not entirely convinced about their capability to build a private messenger if they are willing to just drop privacy tech just because it's inconvenient to implement…

      @cherti Yes, it's 5.39!

      Remember when Signal Desktop was loading super slowly and occasionally even corrupting the local storage? Good times! πŸ˜‚

      @codewiz is that new with 5.39? Just noticed that as well after the update to 5.39 rolled in here. Pretty neat to see that they consistently improve it!
