Mastodon plans to eliminate the local timeline and replace that by groups across instances. I believe this would damage the federated structure of Mastodon. Why care to be in the right place if you can be somewhere and join a group. Who is going to keep the group clean? Why should anyone care to run such a fine place as Fosstodon?
If I would have wanted to use Twitter I wouldn't be here.
Why do FOSS projects have this urge to dismantle themselves as soon as they get big?

@dajbelshaw @edboythinks @rudolf CoCs, probably? Also, that would inevitable happen whenever groups are added, regardless the existence of local timelines. Personally, I prefer the topic oriented concept of groups, but that doesn't prevent creating local groups, as @edboythinks mentioned.

@edboythinks Agreed, but @rudolf makes an excellent point about motivations. Why bother running an instance when it doesn't matter which one you're on?

@rudolf sounds like, if configured correctly, it could just be local timeline with extra features

The part of the joinmastodon blog I am referring to:

      " ...
We also have a vision of a new feature to eventually supplant local timelines: groups. We imagine a group as a place with an actually separate timeline that you can post to, without the post also going out to the public, your profile, and your followersโ€™ home feeds. This timeline could be made visible for group members only. You could join it from your account on any other server,
      ... "
