I calculated for the first time how much tax etc. I pay here in #japan on my monthly wages: it's around 30%.
Decent health insurance is in there, also all else you would expect.. but for example sending children to school here is more expensive than in Germany.
Details on the taxes here and what's in these 30%: https://fluxcoil.net/files/2016_japan_move/japan.html#_taxes and https://fluxcoil.net/files/2016_japan_move/japan.html#_taxes_example_calculation

@globalc Did you remember to include the 10% resident tax and the 2% Fukushima reconstruction tax? I also calculated my tax rate and iirc it was >40%...

@globalc Then, anything you buy using your after-tax income incurs a 10% sales tax. Here in California it's 7.5%, and it's the highest in the US.

It could be much worse: Italy has a standard VAT of 22% (with lower rates for food, health and electricity).

@globalc A substantial deduction I couldn't use back in Japan was having almost 100% of the rent paid pre-tax if you let your employer sign the rent contract. There were some limitations, and the building where I wanted to live wasn't eligible because too old.

@codewiz Great to hear you came out with comparable numbers!
Yea, resident tax is calculated extra, to be payed once per year, I mentioned it below the table with the monthly deductions. Had not realized so far it was 10%.
I also did not look extra here on how many deductions I had on the income via company stock.

@benoit @globalc I thought that all large employers would offer this arrangement.

@globalc @codewiz Even Rakuten is not helping you finding an apartment nor being a guarantor so... That kind of companies must be rare, probably those doing JET program for english teaching.

@codewiz No chance on that, company refused to do all such things, also to act as guarantor. If other companies are more willing to do that, it's a real plus for people who want to go to Japan.
