   Does anyone use xmpp or matrix to message with non tech friends? Or family?

   I understand that signal is problematic but it's a good messaging app with a grest experience that's approachable for non tech users. It has modern features that people expect in a messaging app.

     @obsolete29 I do (xmpp). Don't want to need a smartphone for that. Matrix is too bloaty. The only problem is iPhones.

     @marcelcosta @obsolete29 Do notifications work well on iOS? What client? Last time I tried, maybe 2 years ago, they were messy, I think with Element. Maybe I should try again...

     @tagomago @obsolete29 I use matrix with my partner and family. So far so good. I installed it and created an account for them. After that, everything is smooth.

     Xmpp, own server, I had to help some of them and some others did the thing themselves. It seems it has better uptime than whatsapp xD

     @obsolete29 Exactly... I believe Snikket is tackling that well with their latest client, but you need an account on their server, which is invite-only, so we're not there yet.

     @tagomago Yes. Nearly 100% of my friends and family were on imessage so that's big a huge problem. When I tried the xmpp clients on ios they just didn't work well, especially notifications.

     @tagomago oh? I run snikket server and client on my android phone. I was able to install the client on ios fine a few months ago. Admittedly, I don't use ios anymore and have not tried the client since.
