I never used Pulumi and I have no opinion on it, but every engineer should watch this video to learn...

...how to persuade another engineer to adopt a particular product or technology.

It's hard to sell a solution in an over-saturated market such as cloud infra, and it gets even harder when your product addresses a problem that your target audience doesn't even know they have.

Note how they doesn't even introduce Pulumi until the last 2 minutes.

Many of us would open with a pompous definition. Something like: "a stateful infrastructure-as-code SDK with powerful abstraction and encapsulation and..."

...and this is where most of your viewers would tune out.

Instead, the speaker begins by framing the problem space that IAC addresses, using relatable examples for the audience: infrastructure configuration is code that we can put under version control, review, test...

Then it gives plenty of motivation for wanting to do that: "reduces mistakes", "repeatable process", "create test environments production"...

Then it contrasts IAC with simplistic solutions ("point-and-click", "script up something with bash") and moves to describing competing IAC solutions and their limitations (vendor-specific YAML and JSON, specialized templating languages...)

"We cannot afford to continue to widen the gap between app teams and infra teams, and devs and ops..."

Now that we're aware of having a problem and the many flawed solutions out there, we're ready to listen.

How does this... Pulumi?... yes... how Pulumi solves all this?

We hear a few promising things, and the video concludes with a promise that that we'll learn more in the next video.

To be honest, the second video in the playlist wasn't nearly as good, but they successfully persuaded me to watch it - even though I have no real use for a IAC solution 😅

Terraform is an open-source infrastructure as code software tool that enables you to safely and predictably create, change, and improve infrastructure.
