    I think the collaborative approach is the way to go: a common (as much as possible) database of spam mails. As soon as the first server is affected, the spam mail is stored and the rest of the servers are aware of it, automatically rejecting the creation of an account.
    I'm no programmer though, don't know if this would be a lot of work...

      @bufalo1973 Well, not in the way I think about it. If it is implemented in an "opt-in" way, servers which adhere to it will gain an anti-spam measure; servers which won't will stay the same as we are now.
