I think one of biggest strikes against Mastodon for me is that search doesn't really seem to function (or I'm too dumb to figure out how to use it properly). Very early on on Birbsite I started using searches to find people talking about DOS, where I would either RT or jump into conversations. This seems impossible here, so I'm being a lot more quiet. (I'm sure something a few people are grateful for.)

@dosnostalgic there is no plain text search, no (by design)

BUT you can search for hashtags and you should definitely use those in your toots too, that's how people will find the awesome stuff you post and engage with it :)

@lashman Tags are fine, but people done use tags when they just talk about stuff.

@dosnostalgic well, i guess they will just have to learn how to add hashtags to their posts. No plain text search is for privacy reasons, so i'm pretty sure that will never change. But once people realize that using hashtags doesn't hide their posts from "the algorithm" (like on :birdsite:), i'm sure they'll start using them more, only a matter of time really

@joe Would the search function work any differently if I was on a different instance?

@dosnostalgic an exception to the "you can only search hashtags" rule is you can plain text search people you follow, so just follow everyone on mastodon and then you'll be able to sea lion to your heart's content!

@dosnostalgic Search for other people's toots requires them to use hashtags. If they don't use a hashtag, it's considered they don't want the toot to be found.

@dosnostalgic I've found this too. I'm looking forward to being able to follow favourite hashtags (something a lot of the servers don't support just yet, I'm told).
