    El resultado es esa *publicidad personalizada* que nos acecha cada vez que utilizamos el buscador o cualquiera de sus aplicaciones. Los resultados fueron asombrosos: entre 2001 y 2004, los ingresos de la
    compañía crecieron un 3590 por ciento, un dato que solo se hizo público cuando la empresa salió a Bolsa. Todo el sector siguió su estela.

    «El capitalismo de vigilancia se convirtió en el modelo de acumulación por defecto de Silicon Valley, al que se acogió cada start-up y cada aplicación», cuenta Zuboff. Y en 2008 Sandberg, convertida ya en toda una leyenda, fichó por Facebook.

    Mark Zuckerberg tenía los mismos problemas para convertir su idea en un
    negocio rentable y Sandberg aplicó la misma fórmula con idéntico resultado. Por eso, Zuboff se refiere a ella en su libro como la Typhoid
    Mary (‘María la tifosa’) del capitalismo de vigilancia, en referencia a la cocinera que ‘exportó’ el tifus de Irlanda a Estados Unidos en el siglo XIX provocando, ella sola, una epidemia.
