Why are online institutions like the Free Music Archive important? Because they are (ideally) an enduring public record of the work created by musicians who choose a more permissive style of copyright licensing for a wide range of reasons, and often with a level of commercial success that some people may find surprising:
https://creativecommonsusa.org/index.php/2018/03/30/when-musicians-use-creative-commons-licenses/
The #FreeMusicArchive is facing a funding crisis, and at this point, will be shutting down on Dec 1. If you, or your organisation, can help keep the #FMA alive, please contact them today! While their full collection and an archive of the site will be available on #Archive.org, it would be a real shame if the live site, and its community of curators, was lost to the web: http://freemusicarchive.org/member/cheyenne_h/blog/Big_Changes_Ahead_for_FMA
Does anyone know if there's a #CC licensed database like the Database of #OpenAccess Journals, but listing all academic journals, and any relevants information about them that might be useful in evaluating any papers they publish?
https://doaj.org/
Question: what's the difference between a pad (like #Etherpad) and a #PasteBin, why are there separate packages for these?
Does anyone know if anyone from #CreativeCommons has set up a #PeerTube instance to promote #CC licensed media yet?
The other thought is that a lot of people in the media world, including academics, have a reasonable understandings of the problems networked media can create, but a very limited awareness of the potential solutions offered by technologies like the #fediverse. Maybe free code geeks need to spend more time helping journalists, media academics, and activists educate themselves about this?
Does anyone know how I could get in contact with anyone who is involved in ibiblio.org, and especially #lists.ibiblio.org? I've tried all the usual methods of finding contact info for the admins of the services at these domains, with no success. Is #Ibiblio a zombie project?
It's also better politically, because the arrival of refugees is the result of a local decision to invite them in. Even if that decision not unanimously agreed with, it's much harder to spin it as an imposition by faceless "globalist" bureaucracy at the national or international level, or a conspiracy of "replacement" by the ethnicity or religion refugees are (or e perceived to be) affiliated with.
Aotearoa (NZ) is a world leader in so many ways. Today I read about a pilot programme where local families sign up to invite refugee families to live in their neighborhoods. This has both practical and political advantages over traditional resettlement practice. When refugee families arrive, they know they are welcome, and that there are people who will help them get set up in their new home. They have a surrogate extended family to support them, and help them meet more of their new neighbours.
The ability to try live sessions and dual-boot made a huge difference to the average users willingness to try desktop #GNU/Linux. If it didn't work, or was in any way unsatisfactory, the user could be confident their PC would still work under Windows. If there was a way to test custom ROMs for mobile devices, like #Replicant or #LineageOS, without affecting the default system, I suspect a lot more users would be willing to try them.
#HumanConnection is yet another existing project now considering adding support for #ActivityPub. AP #ForTheWin!

Anyone out there looking for a #PlatformCooperative business idea? Make a food delivery app for ordering #vegetarian / #vegan meals, which can handle multiple languages (at least English, Mandarin, and Espanol). You could work with sites like HappyCow.net to find restaurants whose meals could be listed on the app. The cooperative could be owned by its customers, the delivery workers, or both.
Anyone heard of #ToileLibre? https://www.toile-libre.org/
They seem to be a French (or French Canadian?) #DigitalCafe like #Framasoft, doing community-hosted versions of libre server software (eg RoundCube for webmail).
@adfeno @adfeno @wilbr @bob Snowdrift is a great project, but it's a fairly traditional crowdfunding site, with a libre focus. My friends project aims to solve the problem of funding critical common components that get no public attention, and often little developer awareness, because they always bundled inside other projects. #SoftwareBurger could contribute somewhat to raising awareness (in theory).
That same poorly-researched article on "open source video CMS" also listed #PHPMotion. Which is not free code either. From their homepage:
"Redistribution of source code is not allowed"
https://www.phpmotion.com/terms/
Vimp is a proprietary video hosting package, whose developers supply source code to paying customers. After I exchanged some emails with them a few months back, it looks like they have finally got the message that calling that "open source" is a classic example of #OpenWashing, and a violation of the #OSI trademark, and have removed the phrase "open source" from their website:

We desperately need people to learn basic principles of social psychology, like the fact that giving a behaviour 'reinforcement' (attention and reactions) - whether positive *or* negative - will only tend to encourage that behaviour. On the net, where people can't poke or punch you for just ignoring the, that's by far the most effective way to make them give up and go away. In other words; #DontFeedTheTrolls!
"Hogan explained that the only way to combat this kind of propaganda was to not share it, not report it and not give those posting it a platform." - Dr Bernie Hogan of the Oxford Internet Institute, talking about Isis accounts on Diaspora and other federated social networks:

I'd love to be able to recommend Frostwire as a torrent client. The built-in search is great and I love that the client promotes creative work under CreativeCommons licenses. But their chat uses Slack and worse, they bundle dodgy proprietary add-ons from #DataFarms like Yahoo and now Farcebook into the installer for Mac OS (and presumably Windows). #Avoid
