The amount of premature deaths caused by long exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter in the atmosphere is larger than expected: 8.9 million in 2015.

@ashwinvis Black carbon is also known as soot and it is a particle tha has a graphitic-like structure formed by pyrolisis and nucleation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
Brown carbon are simpler organic structures that are able to absorb radiation too but not as much as BC.
Both species are formed by incomplete combustion.

The significant increase of black and brown carbon during El Niño 2015/6 shows how the atmosphere can be affected if warmer and drier conditions are more prevalent in the future.

@DoctorZen I think this is a win-win for researchers and the public. At the end all the reputation of Nature, Science and Cell is coming from the authors. New :oa: journals are expected to grow.
