@vinzv at that price hard to ignore, although I expect it has a proprietary boot blob. -

@deadsuperhero Lack of privacy groups (like Hubzilla or Diaspora) was one of my comments about it. I also mentioned that it was too vague on encryption and should specify a particular recommended method rather than just "do whatever". -

I've published a technical explanation of how to get unsandboxed arbitrary code execution in Subgraph OS, and how this attack compares with Qubes https://micahflee.com/2017/04/breaking-the-security-model-of-subgraph-os/ cc @rootkovska

@lrshdl I've been hacking on my own postActiv for a while, Mastodon is the relative newcomer :) But I want to support the new instances. One of the big retention problems we've had in the past is that instances get set up on GNU social or postActiv or Mastodon, but the owners end up unable to financially support them when they grow big and they don't get that financial support, so they have to end up closed. We recently lost a couple big nodes to this :c So I am trying to prevent this from happening again!
(PS, I feel I would be remiss not to mention if people want to support postActiv, the patreon is at patreon.com/postActiv - even just a dollar helps :) ) -

Everything you always wanted to know about Mastodon, but were too afraid to ask. https://medium.com/@qinaliu/what-i-wish-i-knew-before-joining-mastodon-7a17e7f12a2b
This is quite a good practical guide to what Mastodon is about, better researched that earlier articles. -

I kinda expected there be a bunch of insecure instances out there, tbh. -

I want to start my #buildingtheroads promotion of instances effort with one of the older instances in the network I am aware of that takes donations to support its efforts, quitter.no
It describes itself as follows:
"This is the place for you who are tired of private companies controlling your conversations and contacts and selling them for profit. On Quitter.no you are not locked up in a single commercial service; [...]
Quitter.no is not a service, because we're not selling commodities. Instead we call it an online commons. The site is run by the small Norwegian non-profit organisation kollektivet0x242.no which is solely funded by donations. All work is voluntary. Joining Quitter.no is completely free, but those who want to help out financially can donate to the organisation."
You can read more and donate here:
http://kollektivet0x242.no
https://www.quitter.no
As always, boost if you want to help the effort! -

Good call with the W3C SocialWG today, we should have a new ActivityPub Candidate Recommendation draft out shortly. (All editorial changes, whew!)

@verius @sim @purplehippo humans are well adapted to small scale social relations, not so much to large scale masses. Large populations tend to become dysfunctional, with bureaucracy being the usually ineffective sticking plaster. -

@rysiek @stefanieschulte I'm not a huge anti-capitalist like some people but I have to say I resent this sort of trying to capitalise on communal activities like this. And the people who wish to cash in on these things tend to be very exploitative. -

I just went around and did some basic nmap-ing on the most popular Mastodon instances, and there's some seriously sketchy stuff in there. Publicly reachable Postgres servers, tons of open internal HTTP ports, SSH with password login, multiple Mastodon instances that seem to be running on mail server VMs, …
I guess if you're just running a single-user instance for yourself, sure, but those are all 2000+ user instances.
