@JB2X Yeah... it's a really huge problem and I'm kind of not surprised that it hasn't been really thought about. Everyone's being funnelled into this venture capital mindset to build huge and own everyone's data in one huge silo, and I very much don't agree with that model.

Everybody wants to be the next Google, nobody wants to be the next nerd's shoebox computer in the basement.

like, for all the times I get utterly pissed off at Eugen, I can kinda see where he's coming from. You don't want to have anyone have a bad time on your server if you can help it, and if you're already inclined to dislike people on other servers it's really easy to believe that it's a pit of vipers nobody ever needs to deal with and block the whole thing.

But you can't really think like that unless it *is* a huge pit of vipers, and in my experience there have been very few places that are just completely irredeemable to the point where you have to precommit to ban everyone in an instance block.

You can suspend individual remote accounts as an admin, and I encourage you to do that if you and others on your server feel that is the best thing to do.

please be careful not to replicate the problems of twitter in trying to build a place for yourselves here.

please don't decide to become the new central authority dictating what is good and what is not, either de facto or de jure.

like, to be honest, my main issue with the shared instance block lists is not that they exist, but that:

(a) they are not sourced with any of reason for why you should block them,
(b) some of these instances don't really have good reasons for why you should block *everyone* on them,
(c) some of them are nonsensical because either they're misspelled, or Mastodon can't federate with them anyway,
(d) despite these issues, people are encouraged to import them anyway For The Good Of The Users,
(e) unintended consequences could happen if every instance just adopted this list; whoever decides what gets on it controls a large part of the fediverse.

tl;dr: outsourcing this decision-making to someone else without review is a really bad idea unless you really trust them

no. you don't get to dictate how we use the platform, only how you yourself use it. we can come to an agreement on some things, but you can't and won't push things onto other people.

As a COURTESY, not required, if you block my instance I would like to know so that I can be salty about it for 15 minutes, then sad. We treat these things appropriately.
