Okay, controversial cynical opinion here: from where I'm standing, Eugen didn't really intend to shut down registrations for the purpose of encouraging federation. It's mainly because the backlog is on fire and the servers are having trouble scaling, and it's a happy coincidence that it does that.

I don't think he would've done it if he didn't need to, so no virtue points there imo. Utility points, sure.

And I could be totally off-base here.

Looks like Mastodon just got a distinction between the local/public timeline and TWKN

looking at that screencap of that conversation between Sim and some people on Mastodon. and jeez, huge huge unbridgeable chasm of understanding here.

that could've been a pretty good discourse about a lot of things, but people on Mastodon just were conditioned to be pretty jumpy about that subject because many many people before definitely don't bring that idea in anything approaching good faith.

so, being used to trolls, they go "delete your account" and disregard the whole argument. and this honestly is their right to -- you are never obligated to argue with anyone here. some people even do try to engage with the argument, however angrily, but it definitely did not look like it was going to go anywhere.

so it didn't go anywhere. everybody just got mad. kinda typical for the internet.

is that about the gist of it, or did i miss something huge?

software was a mistake

it seems to me that expectations were not at all well managed. you wouldn't know mastodon federates at all from the actual ui until you get whackjobs showing up and then be told they're not from this site and have to learn about this.

another reason why local and TWKN feeds are a standard feature i guess
