You don't need to have a PeerTube account to interact with PeerTube videos.

You can comment, like, share etc PeerTube videos and subscribe to PeerTube channels entirely from within Mastodon.

Just copy and paste a PeerTube video or account URL into the Mastodon search box and press enter. You will then be able to interact with it just as if it was a Mastodon post or account.

Replies to video posts in Mastodon will appear in PeerTube as comments below the videos.

"The Fediverse" is more than just Mastodon. The Fediverse is many platforms that talk to each other using a common technical standard called ActivityPub.

If you're using one Fediverse platform, you can also interact with people on other Fediverse platforms, because ActivityPub connects them together.

Shares, follows, likes, comments... these things federate across the Fediverse from one platform to another. This happens so seamlessly that you may not even realise it is happening!

Try it yourself below:

@amogurumi is on PixelFed, a photo platform

@craftykat is on PeerTube, a video platform

@Jonathan is on WordPress (with WordPress ActivityPub plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub), a blogging platform

If you access these from Mastodon, they look just like Mastodon accounts, and you interact with them in the same way too.

However, if you click on their profile avatar images you will see them on their home platforms.

Castopod is a podcasting platform for the Fediverse, it's still in alpha but progressing nicely.

You can find out more about it on its account at @Castopod, and there's also a blog at https://castopod.org

Podcasts can be hosted on Castopod and followed from the Fediverse. When a new episode is added to Castopod, Fediverse users will see the new episode in their timeline and can comment, like or share it.

PixelFed now supports viewing text-only posts, by going to:

Settings > Timelines > Show text-only posts

This lets you see text-only posts in your timeline made by Fediverse accounts you follow through PixelFed.

(Due to its photo-oriented nature, PixelFed hides text-only Fediverse posts by default.)

There's an alternative version of Mastodon called "Mastodon Glitch Edition" (aka "glitch-soc" or just "Glitch"). Glitch is totally compatible with normal Mastodon, but adds experimental new features.

For example, Glitch instances let the admin alter the character limit, allow local posting, text formatting and lots of other stuff.

Many features in Glitch have eventually made their way into normal Mastodon after proving themselves stable and useful.

If you run your own Mastodon instance you can switch to Glitch, and switch back again if you don't like it.

(You may be wondering how this post is so long? It's because FediTips is on an instance that uses Glitch, and the instance character limit has been extended to 1000.)

You can create your own PeerTube instance without technical knowledge by using a managed hosting service such as Spacebear:

Managed hosting means you own and run the instance, but the hosting company does the technical stuff behind the scenes like software installation and upgrades.

If you're new to Mastodon, here are some useful basic terms:

"Instance" - The site you signed up on, for example FediTips is on the https://mstdn.social instance

"Federation" - How instances talk to each other. People on different instances can interact with each other thanks to federation.

"Toot" - A post, a message. Mastodon's equivalent of a tweet.

Boost - Sharing a toot by pressing the boost icon below it (the one that looks like this 🔃 ).

Mastodon is part of the Fediverse, a collection of independent social networks which talk to each other using a common technical standard called ActivityPub.

People you follow on Mastodon might actually be on other networks like PixelFed (https://pixelfed.org) or PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org), or many others.

Because the Fediverse uses a common standard, interaction between the different types of networks is so seamless that it feels like one network.

Fediverse addresses look like this:

@ username @ instance

So, for example, the FediTips address is:

@ feditips @ mstdn.social

(but without the spaces)

You can @ people with this address on the Fediverse, and it works just like @ -ing people on Twitter.

A Fediverse address is longer than a Twitter address because the Fediverse is made up of thousands of independent instances, so Fediverse addresses have to include which instances people are on.
