@tagomago I stopped watching that show a while ago, but not because of the controversy. There is so much female nudity on TV, so why not include more gender balance. I just found it hard to watch young people in such fucked up situations 🙁
@GreenFire@tagomago Yes, I like this approach. It seems practical. I remember reading something similar several years ago. I am happy to hear there has been progress. I recall thinking at the time that the "tax" and dividends would have to be significant enough to impact the bottom line of these mega-corporations. Then they would probably adjust their behaviors to maximize profit. But wouldn't more emissions lead to higher revenue? Why not distribute dividends to those who lower greenhouse gas?
I disagree with the Pope on this one. Forgoing child-rearing is not selfish. We need to be having less children, not more. Overpopulation is destroying humanity, not pets. And dogs are far more godly than humans 🐶
Also WTF, he warned that declining birthrates will lead to lower tax revenue and shrinking economies. Some people should really not be parents and certainly not to increase consumerism.
@tagomago Right. Or we sell carbon like NFTs and get all the tech bros to turn its removal into digital assets. Channel their dark passengers for good ;)
@tagomago Sadly, I agree. I have a lot of respect for grassroots movements, but they are SLOW. We don't have time to gradually change minds. I feel helpless as a scientist too. More data and evidence-based research do not seem to convince the deniers and skeptics. Plus, privileged and powerful people have no incentives to alter their behavior. I feel that the only solution in a capitalist society is to find a profit model whereby protecting the environment is more lucrative than exploiting it.
I try not to be an alarmist when it comes to climate change. It is real, but I want us to find working solutions instead of constantly debating the "politics."
However, the New Year here began with unseasonably warm weather, massive wildfires, tornadoes, flash floods and now snow storms. All within two days.
So I guess I am raising the alarm. Do whatever you can to slow the devastation of the planet. And prepare for a very different future.
Slowly deleting my digital footprint from last year in preparation for 2022. I used to archive everything for posterity and nostalgia, but now I prefer to live in the near present. Besides, our memories are superior archival systems. And forgetting sometimes gives us the joy of rediscovery.
Wow, I am still recovering from that shit-show. There should be a Christmas carol for situations like this. For those in the know, it was an evening full of drama, drunkenness, enablers, flying monkeys, gaslighting and tears. There were even gifts that mysteriously disappeared then reappeared to create confusion and doubt. As the scapegoat and truth-teller in the family, I am so happy that I left home at 17 and avoid them as much as I can. Here's to a better 2022.
Another day and another example of how horrible humans can be. I need to be more careful in trusting people. I still struggle to accept that they are fundamentally self-interested with only conditional empathy.
Social tip: be cautious of "nice" and those who feel it necessary to say "I am a good person." Are they trying to convince us or themselves? Aim for integrity and authenticity instead. Kindness requires honesty.
