We just did the tech check and there were a few issues (now resolved). The engineer at Al Jazeera just told me however that Skype has been banned in Qatar (not a huge surprise) for some time now so they have to do these recordings via VPN from London.

Here’s to working towards more freedom, justice, and equality in 2019. It’s not going to get any easier. It’s probably going to get harder. All that matters is we keep chipping away at the problem and working on the solutions. Every little thing we do, whether it’s raising awareness or reducing harm or creating ethical alternatives… it all matters.

Heck, the fact I can write this on the fediverse is reason enough to be hopeful.

@josemurilo Wow, this (see highlighted paragraph in attached screenshot) is factually incorrect. The quoted expert is conflating “open source” with share alike licenses like GPL. And Google can (and has) enclosed Android by extending it using Google Play Services.

Was going to sign up for a Pinebook until I hit the ReCAPTCHA.

It is the height of irony to force people to make a surveillance capitalist smarter in order to order your “open source” laptop.
