@cwebber yeah this is very concerning. the GPL is still great! the 4 freedoms are still essential! I don't want to see this situation taken advantage of by people that want to dilute free software until it is completely destroyed by the corporate open source and proprietary "open source as in you can see the source but that's it" factions.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Thursday, 02-May-2019 13:22:17 UTC dave GNU Guix 1.0 is out!
https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/blog/2019/gnu-guix-1.0.0-released/
Proud to have been a part of the project since 2013. I haven't been active in awhile, but I have contributed a lot of packages, a Linux container implementation, a build system for programs written in Ruby, importer tools for PyPI and RubyGems, the 'guix environment' and 'guix publish' tools, and probably some small stuff I've forgotten.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Aug-2018 17:18:04 UTC dave @garbados I guess because they popularized it and are ahead of the other cloud providers in their implementation. setting aside my feelings for the name, I think the basic idea of abstracting away server details is good (I guess Heroku is really one of the first big services for this). we need a free "serverless" protocol or something so that there isn't lock-in.
-
dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Aug-2018 17:04:13 UTC dave @lmorchard I think those are valid reasons, but I think we need to look beyond Amazon and Google's cloud and do something that doesn't rely upon proprietary software as a service.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Aug-2018 16:57:11 UTC dave @lmorchard so this is kind of like free software that primarily supports proprietary operating systems, and secondarily free ones. it's nice that it works, but when the proprietary system is the default and best experience, it's not helping people escape proprietary platforms.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Aug-2018 16:36:48 UTC dave Seeing an argument that Mastodon instances are hard to deploy (true of any web application) and that the solution is to focus on making something "serverless" that can be deployed to AWS or other clouds that provide proprietary "serverless" frameworks. Making applications that only run on giant cloud hosting providers is absolutely *not* the path toward technological autonomy. I think we need to better communicate free software principles here.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 16-May-2018 15:45:35 UTC dave @espectalll I hope you are starting to see why "container" can be a problematic word. everyone has a different definition. and in this case we're not talking about only a chroot, but a user namespace as well, and namespaces form the core of what people refer to as a container.
-
dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 16-May-2018 15:19:32 UTC dave @espectalll I wrote a container implementation for guix that can do all sorts of isolation via namespaces.

dave (dthompson@toot.cat)'s status on Wednesday, 16-May-2018 14:37:18 UTC dave Guix can now produce relocatable application bundles. Unlike snap, flatpak, etc. the resulting bundles can be bit-reproducible and the user needs no additional software to run them since every distro can extract a tarball.
