If you cannot tolerate this environment without dictating the actions of others around you, you do not belong here.

@sungo Wait it really pulls all of that data on every notice?

No wonder new mastodon nodes federating was killing existing GS nodes.  That's a lot of overhead.

TBH the fact that even though he was sceptical I'd refederate he was willing to extend the olive branch and offer to watch out for stuff he knew was illegal here spoke volumes to fl0wn as an admin really.

But more seriously, rendered HTML should not be passed in ActivityVerbs or other endpoints.  Only raw content.  Rendered HTML should be internal to an instance so they can render it as desired - different instances may have different plugins and different desires about rendering, such as for example,

Freedom of speech always comes with freedom of association. My own personal problem with instance blocks isn't so much the block itself, but that people are doing them automatically, without vetting, and usually without even consulting their communities, so the people don't know what they're not seeing.  That said I have always advocated a minimalist position when it comes to administration because it is the most practical position: the less you police, the less work you have to spend on policing it and the less social tension you create by doing so.  People are generally adults here, they can work out their differences themselves without intervention for the most part.

@gitgud Interesting note: at least 50 instances are all on DigitalOcean.  "Decentralized" huh?

That is kind of half the problem of these blocks though?  Allow me to expand.

When you block a whole instance, you are blocking _everything_ from it.  There might be good stuff that you agree with, or entertains you, or whatever there, and you're not going to see it unless it leaks out, because _its blocked_.

The meta discussion is getting quite tiresome and mostly comes from busibodies whom seem to think they can dictate to other instances how they act.  You cannot, nor would it be proper for you to do so even if you could.  Block, don't, or move on.  In fact, move on irrespective of blocking or not.  This is not a monolithic organization where you can get everything you dislike or that makes you uncomfortable banned by some central authority of Doubleplus Ungood Police.  If you dislike this, I suggest returning to Twitter, the Fediverse is not for you.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Mastodon, is in fact, OStatus/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, OStatus plus Mastodon. Mastodon is not a network unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning OStatus system made useful by the pubsubhubub, salmon and ActivityVerb components comprising a full OStatus servicer as defined by OStatus.

@archaeme Basically insofar as I can tell when they first connect to someone on another server that's unknown they try to pull all of your notices.  At least, I noticed a shitton of hits to the notice API when people connect to me.  If you don't have many notices then that isnt as much an issue but trying to get my 41k+ on HLA is pretty much as @fl0wn describes it a DOS attack.  I think what is causing this is their conversation stitching being a little bit shit.

@trev I made a point of it.  If you're curious, plateia basically means like a town gathering place in Greece: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateia  (article complete with clutter of tags and meaningful lists, that's how you know its from Wikipedia)

@fl0wn @takeshitakenji Mastodon utterly rapes the API for basically everything.  It's not very efficient code in my observation.  A lot of the calls seem to be for data they already have.
