@dosnostalgic Bernie only warned us about the top 1%, so I think being in the top 2% is fine.

@dosnostalgic And they said we needed a 386 for multimedia, ha!

@dosnostalgic I always say "sure, it was just a layer on top of DOS. Aside from managing the graphics, disk, memory, network, and input devices... DOS handled everything else!" 😌

@bhtooefr @dosnostalgic To the extent there was an ABI, it was different. A program written for one probably wouldn't run on the other. It wasn't until later that stuff like Concurrent DOS and the NEC V20 and its hardware emulation made the line blurry (IMO). If you wanna draw a temporal cutoff, though (which is fair enough), then yeah they were pretty distinct.

@dosnostalgic Also 86-DOS is technically a DOS, I guess? If there's a fine line between DOS and CP/M then there's *no* line here. 😌

@dosnostalgic In '96 I believe we had... a hand-me-down VIC-20... in America... 😩
I had a Genesis and a SNES, tho. And I sometimes got access to a 486 on the weekends at my dad's!
And then I suddenly got bumped up to the AMD K6-II life in 1999 when my grandpa took pity on me!
My sense of what was normal at what time is all messed up lol...

@dosnostalgic I caught the last post of this first and thought it was about a LOGO parser hidden in Quake and got excited for a moment.

@dosnostalgic @a2_4am It took a while but I managed to dig this one up: https://mastodon.social/@shadsy/110471427214212142
The SimCity use-after-free bug shimmed by Microsoft in Windows 95 was actually in the Win16 version of SimCity 2000.

@dosnostalgic @a2_4am You can't do this to me. I've used this as a metaphor to explain so many things. I can never show my face in public again.
Oh no my embarrassment overflowed and now I'm gonna start a Podcast!

@dosnostalgic SimCity 2000 is the answer that immediately comes to mind, but Flight Sim 4 is also pretty charming.

@dosnostalgic Cute, but not likely to go anywhere since the future is RISC. I've got my eye on the platforms of tomorrow, like the DEC Alpha coming out soon!

@dosnostalgic What a legend.
Back then I'll admit, I always clicked the little "x" to close him. It was very simple to do! I didn't think much of it and figured he was there for newbies and that was fine.
I wrote an internal webapp a couple jobs ago which used a JS-implemented Clippy to guide folks through maintenance tasks (ClippyJS on the front end, Python/Flask doing telnet commands on the backend. 😌 I actually got some positive feedback on that later on.

@dosnostalgic I didn't realize the #Hand386 was so much smaller than the other one!

@dosnostalgic @foone @forelioned I'm hoping it's the kind of scam with a small footprint, working x86 CPU, and accessible ISA bus to play with my ISA perfboard cards on. 😌
I ordered the little externally-powered ISA sidecar, as well.

@dosnostalgic Amazing that they could get away with this. Good thing they had a foolproof protection system at the beginning to make sure kids couldn't play!
