I’m a big fan of Hanlon‘s razor, an adage which most of the time you find in the following form:

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

TIL that there’s a version articulated by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in The Sorrows of Young Werther which I like even more:

"Misunderstandings and lethargy perhaps produce more wrong in the world than deceit and malice do. At least the latter two are certainly rarer."

    1. Hanlon's razor
Hanlon's razor is an adage or rule of thumb that states "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Known in several other forms, it is a philosophical razor that suggests a way of eliminating unlikely explanations for human behavior. It is likely named after Robert J. Hanlon, who submitted the statement to Murphy's Law Book Two. Similar statements have been recorded since at least the 18th century. Origin Inspired by Occam's razor, Hanlon's razor became known as such in 1990 by the Jargon File, a glossary of computer programmer slang, though the phrase itself had been in general usage years before. Later that same year, the Jargon File editors noted lack of knowledge about the term's derivation and the existence of a similar epigram by William James. In 1996, the Jargon File entry on Hanlon's Razor noted the existence of a similar quotation in Robert A. Heinlein's novella Logic of Empire (1941), with speculation that Hanlon's Razor might be a corruption of "Heinlein's Razor". (The character "Doc" in Heinlein's story described the...

The release of iOS 13 has led to a new data world record at the Internet Exchange DE-CIX in Frankfurt (Germany)

Traffic peaked at around 7.1 Terabits per second, which approximately corresponds to the simultaneous transmission of up to 1.633.000 HD videos

While the state of mobile apps for Mastodon has been good for quite some time now I’m happy to see some new desktop (web) apps.

So far I’ve tried Sengi and Mastonaut. @sengi_app is a web or Electron app (for all platforms) which reminds me a lot of Tweetdeck. @mastonaut is a native, „Mac-like“ and elegant Mac app.

Both support multiple accounts, both can be used with one or multiple columns and both are surprisingly mature and stable for being relatively new.

In some customers service chat software the send button basically is a fake because the support agents can watch you typing in real-time anyway

It seems as if the Twitter cross-posting tools are broken right now, there is no content from Twitter in the local & federated timelines

Everything is nicer and cleaner right now

(btw, I’m not against cross-posting per se, but if someone just mirrors tweets to Mastodon and isn’t active here, it’s annoying)

I’ve finally found a way to depict Angela Merkel with text characters:
