After the #fossilfuels friendly #COP28 was engineered to be short on firm commitments & long on pious #oil industry-friendly 'aspirations'... the news that #COP29 in #Baku will be chaired by (another) oil industry veteran, should finally put paid to the idea that we can expect a radical & accelerated #greentransition through this process.

Time ran out a while back to follow the oil industry's gradualism - our political generation is just fiddling while the planet burns!

As a woman who one and truly does not give a fuck, I find that I get along best with other people who don't give a fuck. If you're finding some shit I said upsetting, and it wasn't even at or about you, you are failing the "does this person give a fuck" online test, in real time...

It's hard for people to visualize removing tons or billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). I propose we talk about CO₂ removal (#CDR) like a time machine (e.g., this machine will take us back 5 minutes). For example:

Q: How far back in time does planting 100 million trees take us?

A: If one mature tree takes up an average of 25 kg of CO₂ per year, then 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back 33 minutes and 6 seconds in a year. It's not a lot.

"Free speech requires platforming Nazis but banning sex workers" is a pretty common Nazi belief because they're misogynist, puritanical freaks who want to control people, especially women.

Just got an email from first Nature editor I talked to about writing this piece, and they thanked me for writing it and apologized for the fact that my rage got toned-down by Nature's lawyers. Interesting!

Ended by saying that they are glad they're retiring soon because they are scared that ground-based astronomy will be dead in 5 years and I should keep fighting.

That's high in the running for the most depressing conclusion to an email I've ever received. Wow.

Reminder: there's no restriction on having multiple accounts on the fediverse! (many people do!)

If your current home federates/doesn't federate with another server you do/don't want to talk to, you can always make another account with/out access!

Clients like #Fedilab already support multiple accounts and you don't even have to switch accounts to boost, star, or reply, just long press!

One user:one account is for the convenience of advertisers and data aggegators, not humans

Ok, I'm putting this out there now so that people have time to prepare. Obviously there's a lot of people posting about their anniversary of joining Mastodon / the Fediverse at the moment, but there's a particularly special anniversary happening tomorrow.

(Though, for the record, I am not a hater of Bishop Ussher, who was actually a pretty rigorous thinker and a helluva researcher and analyst. However mistaken and misguided his effort, it was accomplished in *1650*, when there was nothing remotely like even an *idea* of evolution, let alone the staggering amount of hardcore science we have now that backs up that theory.)

Austrian Physicist Lise Meitner died #OTD in 1968.

She shared the Enrico Fermi Award (1966) with the chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann for their joint research that led to the discovery of uranium fission. Despite her crucial role in its discovery, Meitner was excluded from the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Hahn. Meitner's exclusion from the Nobel Prize remains controversial. However, her contributions to physics are undeniable.
