A couple of things that might be of interest:

https://snikket.org/ looks like a nice effort to wrap up a pretty chaotic ecosystem into something more approachable.

https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure a good blog post about the pros and cons compared to matrix.

I'm still rooting for matrix but it's not without it's issues.
