@Herne Well, it really is like that. Matrix has strong reasons to be an IM that fights at the mainstream level, although with somewhat damaged roots. While xmpp has that particularity, it always causes a love-hate relationship.
@az You know snikket, it really seemed like an alternative to consider. Reminds me of Movim.
I also support matrix, for its projection as an alternative. But its cons become a burden that sinks the ship. @Herne
A couple of things that might be of interest:
https://snikket.org/ looks like a nice effort to wrap up a pretty chaotic ecosystem into something more approachable.
https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure a good blog post about the pros and cons compared to matrix.
I'm still rooting for matrix but it's not without it's issues.
@Herne Well yes, it goes that way, one of its main cons. Bad publicity, many because it has origins in Israel (the label "privacy" is a word manipulated much in its favor. In addition to the war against Palestine), others because of the complications it has to be able to set up a server and decentralize, etc. Something that on the other extreme, with xmpp, does not happen (of course it has its learning curve, but it is not so big).@az
