We interviewed Daniel Vetter about why he chose to be one of this year's matching donors! (BTW we're very very close to meeting the match, you can help us push it over the top!)
I occurs to me that using proprietary software is a bit like paying someone to include you in their protection racket. (and if you're not paying in $, you're paying in loss of privacy and/or data sovereignty... or all 3).
@alcinnz I don't like those either, first because they generally require use of something that is not #FreeSoftware, autoexecuted through the @Web #Browser using #JavaScript.
Second, I have monocular sight and color blindness, so I expect webpages to respect my system-wide text font and size choices. The less images the better too. Using images to make tables is bad also, a way to make me fail a timed logic test.
Does anyone here know of a good text-to-speech engine? I'm trying to render Swedish. I've played with espeech, Google's TTS and Amazon Polly. It turns out that GTTS with WaveNet voices is magically good, Polly is good enough, while espeech sounds like my Amiga did back in the late 80s/early 90s...
Is there any FOSS alternative out there that actually works?
Hey, so one downside of reversible suspensions in Mastodon 3.3.0 is that due to an oversight, the suspension is only communicated to the account's followers, which is usually far from everyone who needs to know about it. Due to this, a lot of already suspended accounts keep getting reported from other servers. Until we release a fix, consider checking if the account still exists on the original server whenever possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.
A while back I was given maintainership of a program I use. Soon I’m going to land a complete redesign and rewrite on the repo, implemented without referencing the old code at all. How much should I credit the original author in the repo/program itself?
@resynth1943 I'm not a developer but I heard that #FreeDesktop / #XDG and #Xorg / #X11 already allow one thing that is even more cool than the copy-paste-cut right mouse menu entries. They have what is called a “primary”, which acts like a second clipboard, generally using Ctrl+Insert to copy and Shift+Insert to paste.
The closest thing I'm thinking of implementing in Haphaestus is the ability to poll a server for updated page snippets to insert whilst a particular link is selected.
For Rhapsode, I'll never allow pages to autoupdate themselves, that's a terrible auditory UX!
