@cwebber this was exactly my experience with an old Samsung Galaxy S3 I'd picked up specifically for this.
It was legitimately easier to install Replicant, which is Android without the bits you need for most of the hardware to work 😂

@cwebber "How the fuck did phones get THIS BAD."
Google.
@cwebber you're doing it all wrong. You're supposed to download some rom from somone with an animated anime avatar in a forum
I mean, this is clearly documented..
Tried installing Lineage OS on two different phones today. Turned out neither was really possible while having a reasonably recent version.
Android derivatives are so... weird. Having to build a whole "image" to start your world with? It's a nightmare.
I can still install GNU/Linux on machines that are 15 years old and they still generally boot and run. And I don't need to build a separate "installer" per machine.
How the fuck did phones get THIS BAD.
@cwebber Lack of standardization is one reason. x86 machine are pretty homogeneous.

Just putting it out there: if anyone ever wants help - debugging, problem-solving, tutoring, whatever - with the Linux CLI (bash/ksh93, GNU coreutils..., vi, emacs, sed, awk) and/or git, I'll help.
I won't make you feel bad for anything you don't already know. I promise. (Nobody ever should.)
I'll reiterate every once in a while. Boosts appreciated!
A special beer being brewed for the State Of The Map conference this weekend
I thought of something today: When RMS was in Seattle I bought a copy of his Free As In Freedom book and had him autograph it. According to the published schedule at fsf.org he didn't give any talks after that, so I very probably have the last book RMS signed as President of the FSF.

good post about how nerd communities' mass-adoption of the closed and proprietary Discord platform will inevitably lead to the long-term loss of (or loss of access to) mountains of special-interest group knowledge and community history

I think that one of the most harmful myths around computers is the one saying that you have to be smart to program one. It scares a lot of great people, and attracts a lot of people who are not so great, and only come for the bragging rights.
Using (including programming) computers does not require above-average intelligence. Most programmers I've met are in fact incredibly stupid most of the time. And it's fine, it all works somehow.
