@mikegerwitz @lxoliva I'm glad you ack'ed the "not signed" aspect; regarding the nonfree vs free software: mark the metadata of javascript as librejs compatible, then perform a read or write attack against the system. (Heck, it even *could* be free software compliant; most likely the target isn't checking the licensing situation when they're under such attack, but it's also trivial to lie about it.)

Microsoft has released their new Terminal application to GitHub, marketing it as another demonstration of their commitment to "open source". While the project is MIT licensed, did you know it is inextricably linked and dependent upon numerous proprietary SDK tools, headers, and the Visual C++ ATL.
Do not be fooled, see through the mirage of feigned support to undermine and sabotage the original ethics of the free software movement!

@lxoliva had some compelling words about this at LP2019:
https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/m/who-s-afraid-of-spectre-and-meltdown/
I don't know if your comment related at all to Spectre, but---if all the software running on your system is free software, what is there to fear? And I agree.
The biggest trouble is that people often run non-free and untrusted code all of the time in their web browsers, and don't see it as a software freedom or security issue. It's important to recognize it for what it is---untrusted, unsigned, ephemeral software---if you're going to consider security tradeoffs when it comes to certain mitigations. I personally don't run JS at all, even if it's free, with very few exceptions, because it's unsigned. -

@akuchling @cwebber @tastytentacles Also TIL (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-2):
> SHA-256 and SHA-512, and, to a lesser degree, SHA-224 and SHA-384 are prone to length extension attacks, rendering it insecure for some applications. It is thus generally recommended to switch to SHA-3 for 512-bit hashes and to use SHA-512/224 and SHA-512/256 instead of SHA-224 and SHA-256. This also happens to be faster than SHA-224 and SHA-256 on x86-64 processor architecture, since SHA-512 works on 64-bit instead of 32-bit words.
I can confirm that when I tried it out in git-annex, sha-512 is indeed faster than sha-256, as is Skein-512, one of the SHA-3 candidates.
SHA-512/256 refers to SHA-512 truncated to 256 bits, but with a different initial value than plain SHA-512. -

@mdbekhit Yes due to the nature of GNU IceCat I've seen multiple website break (try cnn for example 😀 ). This can be avoided by uninstalling/disabling add-ons but this kind of defeats the purpose of this browser. On the other hand a website breaking in GNU IceCat could also be a warning that there's something fishy about that website.
