mastodon.social says trans rights

Proud of how the server architecture of mastodon.social and the code of Mastodon is keeping up with the load, but wishing for this to transform into new Mastodon servers springing up.

If you were considering starting a Mastodon server, right now would be a pretty good time. Anyone can do it from source, see docs:

There are also hosting providers (not affiliated with me) which are super easy to work with without technical knowledge, like masto.host and hostdon.jp

How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:

1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit

So the cool part about Mastodon, right? You don't need to be on the same domain as other people to talk to them. You can sign-up on or invite your friends to:

And many others, and still be able to talk to the world / follow your friends on mastodon.social and vice versa.

Please help those servers grow by spreading the word about them! (And if you are interested in starting a new server, you can do that too!)

So the Verge article for which I wrote some thoughts about Jack Dorsey announcing #Bluesky is out and it used only a few sentences from what I came up with, so I wanna share the full thing...

I was asked, if Twitter did indeed adopt #ActivityPub instead of coming up with something new, would it be better or worse for the decentralized social web?

I hear this question a lot: There are no blue tick verifications on Mastodon. You can verify ownership of a homepage, it shows up as a green tick next to the link on your profile. To do so check instructions on the edit profile page. It’s automatic.

If an old account is compromised (using passwords from breaches from other sites) and used for spam, our moderation team notifies the owner and disables the account. Visually the account is still there but it's not functional. Please do not mistake that as us not dealing with spammers.
