Looks like #Wasabi (the file host) is still unavailable, so text-only posts for now...

I was going to announce it a bit later and more properly, but Mastodon received a $70k grant from Samsung NEXT through OpenCollective. I intend to make it available to those who contribute to the project, and have already notified some of the most regular contributors. The way OpenCollective works is that anyone can submit an expense and all transactions are listed transparently. It also holds the money.

As for myself, I intend to continue using Patreon for my own wage/costs.

Identical to rc2 except for one bug fix, and since they are so close together, I just moved the release notes from rc2 to rc3.

I want to experience Mastodon at 1 million active users (6x more than now)

According to @TheKinrar's instances.social service, 162,776 people were active on Mastodon in the first week of 2019 (22,459 on mastodon.social)

I've run some calculations based on #Eunomia questions. Unfortunately, no easy way for me to get this information for the entire fediverse, but based on the mastodon.social database:

25% of users post in English
6.5% in Japanese
3.7% in French
3.6% in Spanish
2.7% in Russian
2.4% in German

Notably, 71 users post in "squeak"

To be honest I have not quite finished all I had in mind for this release, as you can see on the roadmap, a bunch of items are still "in progress":

Aesthetic

I have specifically qualified my statement to cross-posts that include the "RT" text and all sorts of broken references to avoid "not all cross-posts" responses, but I still got them. Okay then.

Unsurprisingly, I indeed believe that Mastodon is better than Twitter, and prefer seeing posts created here over posts created somewhere else.

I also think that the ability to cross-post from Twitter works against Mastodon adoption.
