Reading TechRights and yes the Linux Foundation is a problematic organization in a similar manner that W3C is. It's really just another corporate consortium unaccountable to Linux users or developers. The Free Software movement rode the corporate dragon quite successfully for a couple of decades, but now the contradictions in those alliances are showing. http://techrights.org/2019/03/30/what-happened-lf/

    • Strypey
@strypey I'd say that the web was decentralized until the web 2.0 period which began around 2004 (also the beginning of Ubuntu). After then it became increasinged centralized, with The Cloud and virtualization enabling an effective return to mainframe computing.

In the time 1994-2004 people used different email servers. There were personal websites and blogs typically hosted by the many small ISPs which started up. Although Microsoft and companies like Compuserve tried to apply the mainframe model in the mid 1990s they failed because the technology and infrastructure wasn't capable enough and they also over-curated their content making it bland compared to what existed on the "open web".

@strypey Also this could result in a new influx into the fediverse, of an undesirable kind.

Even though I'm only following a handful of people on Facebook my timeline today is especially awful. The worst kinds of mainstream obsessions, and the biscuit is that someone actually unironically posted an AJ video.

Some totally unsolicited life advice which probably nobody here needs, but is evidently lacking elsewhere: try not to make the things which occupy your mind most of the time only comprise of the doings of rich and famous people who you actually have no real relationship with.

@radicalrobit This is a mistake from the 1990s. Nobody actually needs "rich interactivity" in their emails. Such stuff is really just a guise to get malware onto your system and do more spying/advertising via off-site links.

Today's Free Software landscape is less about lawyering and slugging it out in the courts and more about connecting with other commons-related movements.

Watching some of the LibrePlanet video stream and thinking how Free Software has changed over the years. A decade or more ago it was more about copyright battles, license terms, DRM and the long and sometimes dirty fight with Microsoft and patent trolls. The problems now are more about post-Microsoft tech monopolies abusing their powers and the difficult problem of connecting up with other groups who are also suffering from the effects of a malignant tech-augmented capitalism.

In some regards the battles of past decades were a sideshow and now is the time that Free Software is really coming to the forefront as one of the few things which can prevent the few remaining liberties from being extinguished.

"Yet, even here, with these broader technological and social critiques, something is missed. Just as a form of consciousness captured by marketing agents, platforms and algorithms can pacify and victimise whole segments of society, so the intense and thoughtful interactions of tens of thousands can create a different perspective; can turn our attention back onto ourselves and create new forms of self-consciousness through loops of communication and mutual-recognition – and in so doing produce a different kind of will power. This is loosely what I call β€˜gadget consciousness’."

A possible half way between full p2p and client/server would be to mesh the servers but leave the client/server aspect unchanged.

That way client software doesn't need to be modified and as far as it's concerned it's just the ordinary internet.

I think the solution to this is to have a list of approved general instances and to cycle through them every 24 hours. When a new user signs up they do so on today's general instance and hence don't have to make an upfront decision based upon no real information.

Once they're on a general instance they can decide if they want to move to a more specialized one later, once they have more experience in the fediverse.

This looks like the same thing, from over a year ago:

"Up until today I have not had any problems accessing my Gmail account with Thunderbird. This morning however access was denied and I was prompted to provide a new password. i tried this but each time a message came back that it was unacceptable. In the end the only solution I found was to go in to my Google account and turn off secure apps or more precisely swich to allow unsecure apps. As soon as I did this I can access my gmail account again OK but it does beg the question why does Google NOW consider the Thunderbird application to be insecure."

Doing a bit more research on this it appears to be not a new problem, and more likely something to do with Gmail insisting upon OAuth2 authentication for IMAP.
