Please, please, please consider organising off Facebook. Really. It's not snobbery. It's really dangerous to people who use their legal names to use Facebook for organising.

@feral_yogi Yes, but at the same time services such as masto.host *could* end up being the "next Google", just on a different level. Just imagine Google or Microsoft either buying or creating such a service themselves and offering people to run "their own mastodon instances free of charge" without any hassle - just point-and-click install and you're done. That's just the same way Google Mail made available e-mail to a load of "non-techies". 😉

There's an important psychological privacy feature in federation: if your users can switch to another instance without leaving the network, an instance admin is less likely to abuse their power.

A big part of the reason Facebook, Twitter, Google etc do what they do is because they think users have no real choice but to accept their terms and conditions.

If e.g. FB was forced to federate, it would lose a lot of users with each privacy breach.

There's these studies about how once you commit to an opinion in front of someone you're less willing to back down from it even in the face of new insights; and online in 2018 has this culture where people rush to comment on everything that happens as fast as possible, you know? Is that a good combination?
