resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 06-Oct-2018 16:27:03 UTC resist.berlin With the rise of the internet, we had the unique opportunity to build a revolutionary global network, where everyone with a computer could exchange information, educate themselves and contribute equally.
Instead, we created TV 2.0:
"Video is almost 58% of the total downstream volume of traffic on the internet.
Netflix is 15% of the total downstream volume of traffic across the entire internet."

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 24-Aug-2018 22:59:55 UTC resist.berlin Okay, I just set up a Minetest server. Download the game from https://www.minetest.net/ or through your repositories. Then join:
Server: resist.berlin // Port: 30000
Let's see if it works. If it does, I will let it run 24/7.
And yes, it's currently a completely vanilla world without mods. Please don't complain for now 😁
See you in cyberspace!

More information about Minetest here:
It's really fun and also collaborative 🙂

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 14-Jun-2018 21:30:13 UTC resist.berlin There are two spots where #Google, #Amazon, #Facebook, #Apple, #Microsoft (and others) are most vulnerable. You have to attack them where it hurts them the most.
1) Is their public image. Make them look as shitty as possible, they deserve it. Ideally, make them *deny* things that make them look good. This is the high art of pissing someone off. Claim publicly that Google is stopping AI research or whatever. You will win.
2) Don't use their services. Seriously. Stop. Stop. STOP. Delete. Forget.

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Jun-2018 09:50:40 UTC resist.berlin Five years ago to the day, the #PRISM program was made public. One of the main revelations in the summer of #Snowden, making very clear which companies we all should avoid.
However, let's not forget that Snowden had already tried to leak the information many months earlier. The NSA scandal almost didn't happen because Greenwald was reluctant to use PGP and didn't take Snowden seriously in the beginning. #TrueStory

No, folks. Trends enable hype, commercialization, hierarchical thinking and abuse. Listen to the people who are legitimately scared of anti-features like this. Trends will steer your thoughts away from what actually matters and make an ecosystem more vulnerable.

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Sunday, 03-Jun-2018 10:44:59 UTC resist.berlin Unpopular opinion:
I don't think we should make free and federated replacements for *every* proprietary social media site, just because we can. It's not a no-brainer.
Yes, we would get rid of corporate surveillance, but a free and federated version of site X can still be highly addictive and distracting, plus enabling all sorts of abuse if not designed properly.
I don't want to curb your enthusiasm, but please give this some more thought before jumping on the bandwagon.

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 31-May-2018 23:56:12 UTC resist.berlin Country closest to #Bitcoin in terms of electricity consumption: Czech Republic
Electricity consumed per transaction (KWh): 981
Number of U.S. households that could be powered by Bitcoin: 6,398,945
Bitcoin's electricity consumption as a percentage of the world's electricity consumption: 0.31%
Carbon footprint per transaction (kg of CO2): 480.57

Bitcoin will soon surpass Chile, Austria and the Philippines. Holy fucking shit. We have to stop this.

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 31-May-2018 23:37:06 UTC resist.berlin @bob I think by now the Bitcoin network has surpassed the energy consumption of Denmark and Switzerland, by conservative estimates. It's real, look it up. So there is a huge scaling problem, and it continues to grow exponentially.
Yes, I'm also in favor of a cryptocurrency solution, but I can't imagine one independent from the weary giants of steel and flesh right now. Proof of work will always lead to massive distortions. Why hasn't SpaceX built a mining satellite yet... don't tell them 😝

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 31-May-2018 21:51:34 UTC resist.berlin It's been 6 weeks and 3 days on Mastodon for me now. Never seen so many inspiring, critical, thought-provoking things in one place before. The overwhelming majority of people here is friendly and open-minded, whatever their background may be. And we are federated, we all come from different places, have different (sometimes weird) interests and it still works. May this be a role model for society.
Thanks to everyone who toots and favs, boosts and follows. And to all the admins. Thank you! ❤️

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 14-May-2018 15:56:13 UTC resist.berlin Can we also please talk about the need to MITM the encrypted message first before one can launch any #efail attack? Thanks to ubiquitous TLS, this seems to be the much more difficult feat to pull off these days (unless you have considerable resources). The cost of targeting and MITMing a given user is gigantic.
Telling the general public to uninstall GPG extensions is really silly, they should do the opposite. And install updates and disable html, ffs. Everything else is just FUD 😩

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 14-May-2018 09:55:52 UTC resist.berlin Just donated 20€ to #GnuPG for keeping it real. They have only received 41€ in May so far, which is ridiculously low given the importance of that project. Please help out if you can:

(Really angry to see this shit blowing up on mainstream media now, this will be a frustrating week...)

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 04-May-2018 12:47:03 UTC resist.berlin Unpopular opinion: Sorry, #rp18 is just the worst. Not wanting the Bundeswehr to recruit on your conference is fine, but the entire event is still in bed with the neoliberal state and surveillance capitalism. Check out their long long list of problematic partners, including #Google and #Airbus:
https://18.re-publica.com/en/partners
Also, they are directly endorsing surveillance products:

All this is done by people close to netzpolitik.org - how is this even possible? 🤑

resist.berlin (resistberlin@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 28-Apr-2018 13:56:04 UTC resist.berlin Warning: #Berlin #police will almost certainly conduct many cell site analyses (de: Funkzellenabfragen) this weekend and around May 1st. Similar situation in other cities. If you don't want your number to appear in suspicious datasets, leave your phone at home, switch to airplane mode or even turn it off entirely. You can make their job considerably harder if you don't run around with a beacon in your pocket all the time!
