If you have Facebook "like" buttons embedded on your website, it could make you liable for breaking GDPR privacy laws, even if it's Facebook doing the illegal stuff:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/07/29/eu_gdpr_facebook_like_button/
You can protect your site from legal liability (and protect your users' privacy) by removing all Facebook like buttons.
Please tell your employers/organisations about this ruling, it may help convince them that Facebook is toxic (or at least that embedded like buttons are toxic).

As the front page is getting a bit unwieldy, I've added an alphabetical list to switching.social too:

Just click on whatever you want to replace.

Does anyone know the status of federation on #Plume?
The official account used to be federated, but now it isn't? (Or at least, I can't seem to follow it any more from Mastodon?)
Also, is there an official account to follow for Plume any more?

Facebook Messenger still scans all messages, even with end-to-end encryption. Scanning is done locally on the device before text messages are sent and after received messages are decrypted.

Looking for something like Unrollme (which makes a daily digest of bulk emails, receipts, etc.) that I can run myself and isn't owned by a "market intelligence" company with a history of selling scraped data. Any ideas?

Yup :blobsad:
And through Abebooks, Amazon also owns 40% of LibraryThing, which is why it isn't listed either.
BookFinder.com is also owned by Amazon through Abebooks.
It's amazing how many companies there are like this, where they do their best to hide their parents' identity.
(In real world products, the "Innocent" brand of smoothies implies it is independent, but it's actually part of Coca-Cola.)

I've updated the "Alternatives to Amazon Books" page to make it clearer.
If you're looking for alternatives to Amazon Books, or Amazon's book-related properties (Kindle, Goodreads, Audible), here are some suggestions:

I'm not a developer so I can't really comment on those, sorry :blobsad:
Github probably not a good idea as it's owned by Microsoft, but I don't know enough about the technical side of things to recommend an alternative.
A lot of open projects are now hosting their own gits though?

Just to make clear, there's nothing innately wrong with private companies charging for their services.
However, for-profit VC-owned online companies will tend to have more financial incentive to spy on their customers :blobsad:

I just can't see the point of using a for-profit VC company like Scribd when we already have excellent well-established non-profit alternatives like public libraries and Open Library.
Kobo is listed as a "least worst" alternative rather than a positive recommendation. If there was a free open alternative to Kindle I would be listing that instead.

Yes, I have local bookshops listed at the top of the alternatives! 👍
I've had really really good experiences with my local bookshop. When I've asked them to order titles, they have often got me my books within 24 hours!
This is faster than Amazon, which takes at least couple of days in total from order to actual delivery.
Local bookshops are a treasure ❤️
