If you're using a computer, did you know you can control Mastodon through your keyboard?

You can find a list of keyboard commands by pressing "?"

Also, an additional command not listed there: you can use emoji by typing ":" and then a keyword (for example ":smile") and then selecting the emoji with the arrow keys.

Hey, @switchingsocial, I'm looking for an open-source, trustable, service to share/backup files with my (non-tech) family between computers (not phones/tablets).

For energy reasons, I'd like to avoid hosting yet another physical device, so I'm looking for something kind of like Dropbox.

I believe that BTSync would have worked, but doesn't seem to exist anymore.

    Do people have suggestions?

    Have you considered NextCloud?

    https://switching.social/ethical-alternatives-to-dropbox-google-drive-and-google-docs/#nextcloud

You don't have to self-host it, there are providers who will do it on your behalf.

I think there are restrictions on things like the NASA logo etc where they don't want to be misrepresented.

But yes, in general US government material tends to be public domain by default 👏 👍

I don't think we should be namecalling people. No one here is a twit.

Whatever one might think about backups, most people simply aren't used to the concept of backing up their social media content.

Also, many people access social media through mobile devices which may not even have the storage capacity for all their posts.

I think there are advantages even if you don't self-host.

The telephone network is decentralised, and that means we can switch to other operators without leaving the network.

This pressures phone operators into behaving, because they don't have a network effect lock-in if they misbehave.

The same principle applies to decentralised social media. If Facebook misbehaves, you are stuck there. If a Mastodon instance misbehaves, it will be quickly abandoned.

To put this in non-technical words, I think you could compare social media to restaurants:

If you want a cast iron guarantee of a certain kind of food, go to McDonalds.

If you want much better, tastier, fresher and healthier food, go to a well-run independent restaurant that has good reviews.

If you just pick an indie restaurant totally at random, it may be awful with terrible food.

The fediverse is a diverse range of projects in different stages of maturity.

Mastodon has been going several years and has relatively good amounts of resources, so it has newbie-friendly things like joinmastodon.org

A long-established instance on Mastodon is a good starting point.

Pixelfed is much newer, and not finished yet.

(As for data accountability, there is zero of that on Facebook etc. They collect whatever they want and do whatever they want.)

    @amal @rwa

In the case of PixelFed, it is still not officially "production ready" and it lacks Mastodon-style customisation features for the instances, which would let them give more details about how it's run, who it is for etc.

The devs are aware of this issue and they're planning to add these options for version 1.0
