Human beings tend to need to hear things from two or three different sources before they will take a step back and examine whether they are doing the right thing. :blobshrug:

If you can be one of those sources, you're taking people a step closer to switching.

    @switchingsocial
Open source and fediverse is really cool, but I have simple and the most valuable question: how to move your contacts to fediverse things? For example, all my colleagues and family use telegram for personal messaging and slack for work-related things. Could you give me some ideas about how to "advertise" such tools like matrix for them?

It's a big topic, and (as you might expect) there are no easy answers.

Maybe the most important is to briefly tell them there are alternatives you prefer, and why you prefer them.

People will probably stick to whatever they were using, but letting them know about alternatives is a really good first step.

If they later also hear from someone else about these alternatives, and later maybe from a third person too... well, at that point they may actually consider switching 👍

I love the light theme especially on the single column, it's relaxing and calm 😌

Dark themes make me tense 😟

Not sure what to do in this situation...

If I recommend ChatSecure people will complain it isn't fully OMEMO compatible, if I recommend Monal as you point out it has its own problems.

But if I don't recommend either, people will ask what they can run on iOS and Mac.

    😕

I wish XMPP wasn't such a mess. Starting to wonder if it is even suited to non-tech people.

For transparency, I've just deleted a post recommending XMPP client Zom as I've just been told it's being abandoned, as they are moving to Matrix.

Sorry about that, I didn't know.

    @andycuccaro

Yeah, I just had another message about that.

It's weird though because the website (zom.im) says absolutely nothing about this.

If they're aiming at non-tech people, they should be communicating stuff like this more clearly.

"they will be running Xmpp server for a month after that your data and account will be deleted."

If that's the case, they should be taking down the website now and putting up that statement on its own.

It's not good service for a product aimed at non-tech people.

    I do believe you

Just meant, there's nothing on their public website (https://zom.im/) to indicate they have abandoned the project.

This isn't very user-friendly of them, to carry on advertising an abandoned project :blobsad:

p.s. Some OMEMO-compatible XMPP apps that are particularly suited to non-tech people:

    Zom (Android/iOS)
Really easy to use, you just think of a username.
    https://zom.im

    Quicksy (Android)
Also really easy to use, you can register with your phone number.
    https://quicksy.im

They are part of the XMPP network, so you can chat to people on Zom or Quicksy from any other XMPP instance or app.

#XMPP (aka #Jabber) is an easy, widely used free federated chat system.

There are thousands of instances to sign up at, such as https://chinwag.im and
    https://www.xmpp.jp

There are also *lots* of apps.

Maybe the most important thing is that an app supports OMEMO privacy:

    https://omemo.top

    Some recommended OMEMO-compatible apps:

    Conversations (Android)
    https://conversations.im

    Gajim (Win/Linux)

    Monal (iOS/Mac)
