The original post this all began with was Eugen encouraging instance owners to block any Gab instances, because Gab was looking at moving onto the Fediverse.

It is ok for instance owners to defederate as they see fit!

Some defederated mastodon.social because they didn't like very large instances, and that was their choice.

No one talked about it impinging on Eugen's freedom of speech, or the freedom of speech of mastodon.social's members, because it didn't.

You're being disingenuous. This is not a dispute about admins, it's about the entire purpose of the instance.

Gab is a neo-Nazi site. It was made for neo-Nazis who have been thrown off other sites.

Spammers: "Hey there, it's a spam factory here, we've set up an instance on the Fediverse. I hope it's ok for us to federate with you so we can flood your timeline with unsolicited adverts?"

Fediverse: "No, go away. We don't want to see any spam, we will block you from federating."

Spammers: "You are censoring us! Who are you to make these decisions! Censorship doesn't work! Can't you just leave it up to your members to decide if they want our products?"

One instance blocking another is is not about freedom of speech. If you own a server, you are allowed to choose who has access to it.

If you say every server must allow all people access to it, are you going to allow spammers access? Or identity thieves? Or scammers?

Gab was set up to accommodate neo-Nazis who use Nazi symbols, Nazi salutes etc. The Nazis main policy was mass murder.

ISIS: "Hey there, it's ISIS here, we've set up an instance on the Fediverse. I hope it's ok for us to federate with you so we can promote mass murder?"

Fediverse: "No, go away. Advocating murder is wrong, we will block you from federating."

ISIS: "You are censoring us! Who are you to make these decisions! Censorship doesn't work! Can't you just leave it up to your members to decide if they want to join our organisation and murder lots of innocent people?"

Fair enough, that is a problem with non-portable identities on decentralised media.

I agree portability needs to be worked on, for many different reasons. An even bigger issue is when instances disappear or become unreliable in some way.

Mike McGivrin was/is working on making federated IDs portable, but I think he's given up on ActivityPub now?

Hopefully updates to federation will help in the future.
